Steroid hormones: Interactions with membrane-bound receptors
نویسندگان
چکیده
Steroid hormones are generally thought to pass easily across a plasma membrane into a cell, interacting once inside with soluble nuclear receptors, but recent experiments have demonstrated the importance of membrane-bound receptors in mediating the activity and the metabolism of steroid hormones.

The antinociceptive effect of 17β-estradiol in the paragigantocellularis lateralis of male rats is mediated by estrogenic receptors
Introduction: 17β-Estradiol is a neuroactive steroid and its pain modulatory role has been well studied previously. 17β-Estradiol modulates nociception by binding to its receptors and also by allosteric interaction with other membrane - bound receptors such as glutamate and GABAA receptors. Paragigantocellularis lateralis (LPGi) is also involved in pain modulation and perception, in addition...
متن کاملAn abridged history of sex steroid hormone receptor action.
The field of steroid hormone action is well established, although it is barely more than four decades old. Pivotal experiments in the late 1950s and 1960s showed that hormone-binding components exist within nuclei of target tissues and that steroid hormones act by regulating gene expression, rather than directly influencing enzymatic processes. The understanding that steroid hormone receptors i...
متن کاملInteraction of JAK with steroid receptor function
The function of steroid receptors is not only regulated by steroid hormones, but also by multiple cellular signaling cascades activated by membrane-bound receptors which are stimulated by growth factors or cytokines. Cross-talk between JAK and steroid receptors plays a central role in the regulation of a multitude of physiological processes and aberrant signaling is involved in the development ...
متن کاملSteroid hormone interactions with target cells: cross talk between membrane and nuclear pathways.
The biological effects of steroid hormones are mediated by receptors associated with the plasma membrane as well as located inside of target cells. This perspective focuses on recent advances in our understanding of the integration that occurs between membrane-associated rapid signaling events and various changes in gene transcription that modulate the function and phenotype of steroid-responsi...
متن کاملModulatory Effects of Sex Steroids Progesterone and Estradiol on Odorant Evoked Responses in Olfactory Receptor Neurons
The influence of the sex steroid hormones progesterone and estradiol on physiology and behavior during menstrual cycles and pregnancy is well known. Several studies indicate that olfactory performance changes with cyclically fluctuating steroid hormone levels in females. Knowledge of the exact mechanisms behind how female sex steroids modulate olfactory signaling is limited. A number of differe...
